Non-Warranty Repairs, Changes, and Refinishing (R/C/R)

We offer repair, modification, and refinishing services for badges, hat badges, and medals, subject to item condition and service limitations. Please review our Limitations on R/C/R Services and Warranty Policy for full details.

Good to Know:

  • These services are available for Entenmann-Rovin Co. products as well as most items from other manufacturers.
  • Items previously modified by the customer or an unauthorized third party may still be eligible for service, depending on condition.

Repairs

  • Any warranty-covered repairs can also be performed on out-of-warranty items. See Warranty.
  • If damage is too extensive, we may recommend remaking the item instead. See Limitations on Repairs.

Changes

  • Center Seal Updates – Replace the center seal on your existing item.
  • Panel Modifications – Change up to two panels on an existing item.
  • Additional Panels – Add one panel to an existing item if structurally feasible.

Refinishing

Our standard refinishing process includes:

  • Removing the old lacquer
  • Thorough cleaning
  • Polishing to a high-luster finish
  • Applying a fresh coat of lacquer to restore original appearance

⚠️ Important:
Refinishing enhances the surface appearance but cannot remove significant scratches, dents, deeply etched engravings, or structural damage. Severely worn items may require remaking.

Limitations on Repairs, Changes, and Refinishing Services

Limitations on Repairs

Excessive Damage

  • Items that have been crushed, run over, or otherwise severely damaged may not be repairable. For departmental items with extensive damage, we’ll likely recommend a full replacement. For personal badges, a departmental Letter of Authorization is required before it can be remade.

Hard Enamel Repairs

  • We cannot apply hard enamel to existing badges, as the high-heat process required would damage the finished piece.
  • Damaged enamel may be patched with paint; however, results can vary in appearance.
  • Preferred Method: We offer replacement of up to two panels containing damaged enamel. For more extensive damage, a full remake may be recommended.
  • Note: If you prefer to patch the damaged enamel rather than replace the panels, please state this clearly in your request to help ensure clarity and efficiency.

Limitations on Changes

  • We cannot change the shape of a finished item (e.g., from domed to flat).
  • We cannot change the finish (e.g., from silver to gold) of a completed item.
  • We do not recommend replacing more than two panels, as this can compromise structural integrity.

Limitations on Refinishing

Deep Scratches & Structural Damage

  • Refinishing does not correct deep gouges, dents, or compromised structure.

Surface Plating

  • Items with surface plating (e.g., gold-plated) cannot be refinished, as the process removes the plating.
  • We cannot guarantee the finish will remain unchanged after refinishing.

Repeated Refinishing

  • We advise against refinishing an item more than twice.
  • Repeated polishing can wear down design details and lettering, which may reduce enamel adhesion and make engraving less visible.

How to Request Non-Warranty Repairs, Changes, or Refinishing

Step 1: Submit Photos & Service Request

  • Email clear front and back photos of the item to your Account Manager.
  • Include a brief description of the requested service(s).
  • ⚠️ Do not send items without submitting a service request.
    • Items without explanation may be delayed.
    • Unidentified items may be discarded after 90 days.

Step 2: Item Evaluation

  • Your Account Manager will review the item and assess if the requested service is feasible.

Step 3: Service Approval & Quote

  • If the photos do not reveal any issues that would make repair or refinishing inadvisable or impossible, we’ll provide a detailed quote outlining the cost and scope of work. In some cases, we may ask you to send the item(s) in for a physical evaluation, as certain details can be missed in photos. Once we’ve received and inspected the item(s), we’ll issue the final quote.

Step 4: Shipping Policy

  • Non-warranty services do not include free shipping.
  • Customers are responsible for all shipping charges to and from our facility.
